Street Photography with an iPhone

There is a quiet war on the streets about what kind of camera you are using to capture your photos.  For some photographers, it is a fancy DSLR camera, complete with a variety of lens and a snazzy camera bag. For others, it is the ubiquitous iPhone, or some other device that slides in and out of your pocket.

Who wins?  I know in my previous article, 7 Reasons Why the iPhone 6 is My Camera of Choice, I was very clear on my preference of cameras.  But, I thought of putting personal bias aside and discovering if there is more to this DSLR and smartphone issue than meets the eye?  As a street photographer, I am always trying to improve my craft.  I feel it is time for me to take a look at this camera war a bit more seriously and weigh out the pros and cons of each camera type.

7 Reasons Why The iPhone 6 is My Camera of Choice

I know that this is probably shunned by many professional and semi-professional photographers alike. I can even hear my own friends teasing me from behind the shadow of my words. I think it’s time I come out of the closet.

I love taking pictures on my iPhone 6…

My Favourite Yogis on Social Media, Part 1

I have been practicing yoga for quite some time, and have a secret envy for those that are able to do handstands. Admittedly, I am not there yet, but I am looking forward to the day when I can let my body go, and trust that my head won’t fall through the floor.

What has really helped me lately with my postures? I avidly follow others in social media, and watch them perform their poses. As a visual learner, I can honestly say that this has advanced my own practice tremendously. So, I thought that this week, I would share with you some of my favourite yogis doing their thing and help awaken your mystic beast through your visual senses.

Landscapes of the Dominican Republic

I am always amazed by what another country has to offer.  So during my latest travel excursion, I made the decision to explore the countryside of the Dominican Republic.  I was hoping that I would catch the beauty of this subtropical island, as well as to discover some of its fantastic exports!  With me were three cameras; my GoPro Hero4 Black, my Sony a5000, and my iPhone 6.  I was not disappointed by what I discovered, and I can’t wait to share what I learned with you!

Toronto’s Best Street Artists, Part 1

There is nothing like a bit of sunshine to warm up the walls and bring our street artists back outside! In the last couple of weeks, I have been so happy to have been invited down to shoot some fantastic work in and around the city of Toronto.

Scuba Diving With My New GoPro Hero 4K

As my username scubagal may have alluded, I am a certified open water scuba diver.  I also volunteer my time with an organization called Project Aware, which for one thing, tries to clean the bottom of the ocean from human debris.  So, when I purchased my GoPro Hero Black, I couldn’t wait to try it out!  What I discovered, was a bit surprising, not just from the GoPro Hero4 Black, but also from photographing underwater.

Choosing the Right Mounting Accessory

Boyancy and Coral
Boyancy and Coral

Getting your buoyancy right when scuba diving and photographing coral is challenging because you don’t want to damage the aquatic life.  So, I knew right from the start, that I needed some kind of mount to help me stabilize the camera and free me up to keep my buoyancy right. I quickly discovered that for kicking around on the beach, or for above water activities, the GoPro Head Strap Mount really works well.  But for diving, it was never going to work. You simply cannot have goggles and a camera mount on your head at the same time.  As you can see from this featured article photo, I don’t have that much space on my head!

My 7 Favourite iPhone Photo Apps

A funny thing, isn’t? Do you find it hard admitting that you, as a photographer, are just in love with taking pictures with your camera phone? I think the term is, iPhoneographer, at least for those of us who are iPhone users. Much to the dismay of regular photographers, we do have a name.

I just love my iPhone! I am not promoting Apple products, nor am I on their pay roster (but maybe I should be),  I simply just love my iPhone.

Q & A with Director James Buffin

It is hard to believe, but I met James back when I was about 13 years old.  He was dating my bestest friend, Elyse, and we would often all hang out.  James would sometimes ride my friend on the back of his motorcycle.  Even back then, he radiated coolness.

It turns out that his film, Jingle Dress, just had its premier at the Aboriginal Education Centre, in Toronto, Canada.  This incredible film from Veritus Pictures, will be one worth seeing!

Introduction of ScubaGal – Meet Me

I must start by saying that I am as surprised at writing this article, as you, my friends and family, are at reading it.  Who would have thought that this secret and quiet passion of mine would amount to anything, let alone, THIS?  Thousands of photos later, I am choosing the ones that changed my life, to share with you my journey that brought me here.

The Thinking Pool
My First Instagram Photo, The Thinking Pool

I remember clearly posting this picture. It was my first Instagram shot.  I had been staring, so transfixed in the moment, blue ripples hypnotizing me.  It was during this time that I needed creative release more than I ever did.  We all have those moments, for sure, and with the uniqueness that makes us human, we all express them differently.
